3^rd November 2017

Aldeburgh's Inshore Lifeboat (ILB), ‘Susan Scott’, was requested to launch after there was a report of a person with a suspected fractured ankle on the shoreline of the River Alde. The ILB was launched at 4.50pm and found the casualty at Butley Creek, south of Orford.

The casualty had been on a boat and came back on shore, where they slipped over. They were assessed by the lifeboat crew, stretchered and transported to Orford Quay to await the ambulance. The local Coast Guard team were also present. The ILB returned to station at 7.45pm.

22^nd October 2017

Aldeburgh's All-Weather Lifeboat, ‘Freddie Cooper’, was launched after a report of an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) signal being picked up south of Orford Ness lighthouse. At 3.45 pm there was a launch request by UK Coastguard, with the ALB being launched soon afterwards heading to the co-ordinates of the signal. Once on scene, the crew of the ‘Freddie Cooper’ were tasked to search the immediate area. Coast Guard teams from Aldeburgh and Shingle Street carried out a search from the shoreline

An EPIRB alerts search and rescue services, in the event of an emergency, by transmitting a coded message via a satellite, to the closest co-ordination centre. Once a further satellite had passed over the position and received no signal, the ALB was stood down and returned to station.

9^th October 2017

Aldeburgh's All-Weather Lifeboat, ‘Freddie Cooper’, was launched after a report of a 26 foot yacht, with engine failure, half a mile east of Orford Ness, with 1 person on board. At 3.14 pm there was a launch request by UK Coastguard, with the ALB being launched soon afterwards.

Once on scene, the crew of the ‘Freddie Cooper’ assessed the casualty then established a tow. The ALB then towed the yacht to the entrance of Harwich Harbour, where it was met by Harwich ILB and accompanied to a safe mooring at Shotley Marina. Aldeburgh ALB returned to station at 7.50pm

10^th September 2017

Aldeburgh's All-Weather Lifeboat, ‘Freddie Cooper’, was launched to a yacht with mechanical problems near Orford Ness, south of Aldeburgh. Weather conditions were poor with rough seas and wind speeds of force 5-6. Once on scene, a tow was established and the casualty taken to Harwich. The ALB returned to station at 11.45pm.

10^th September 2017

At 3.20pm there was an ILB "Susan Scott' launch request, by UK Coastguard, to a report of a local boat, in the river, with a mooring rope around the propeller. Once on scene, the crew enquired if assistance was required, but the problem had been resolved, so the ILB returned to station.

4^th September 2017

Aldeburgh's All-Weather Lifeboat, ‘Freddie Cooper’, was launched to evacuate a crew member from a research vessel, East of Aldeburgh. The sea state was slight with the wind southerly at 14 knots At 4.47pm there was a launch request by UK Coastguard. Once on scene, the crew of the ‘Freddie Cooper’ assisted the casualty to transfer to the lifeboat. The casualty then returned to Aldeburgh on the ALB.

27^th August 2017

Aldeburgh's Inshore Lifeboat, ‘Susan Scott’, was launched after a report of two persons calling for help, on the mud banks of the River Alde.

At 4.10am there was a launch request by UK Coastguard. The ILB was launched into the river to assist Aldeburgh and Shingle Street Coastguard in a search of the river banks. The report had stated that two people were sinking in the mud. The police helicopter was also in attendance. The ILB crew searched both sides of the river from Brick Dock to Aldeburgh Yacht Club, however no persons were located. The ILB was stood down at 6.25am and were back on station at 6.40am.

5^th August 2017

Aldeburgh’s All-Weather Lifeboat, ‘Freddie Cooper’, was launched after a report of a 6 metre catamaran, having lost its mast, South of Aldeburgh, with 2 persons on board. At 4.20pm there was a launch request by UK Coastguard. Once on scene, the crew of the ‘Freddie Cooper’ assessed the casualty by transferring 3 crew on board the catamaran.

The crew assisted in the recovery of the mast from the sea, stowed it securely, then established a tow. The ALB then towed the catamaran to Harwich, where it was met by the Harwich ILB, which accompanied them to a safe mooring at Levington Marina. Aldeburgh ALB returned to station at 9.00 pm

Callout No. 4

3^rd August 2017

Aldeburgh lifeboat, Freddie Cooper, was launched at 20.20, at the request of the Coast Guards, to a 20 metre racing yacht with power problems. The yacht was on its way from Helsinki to Southampton to take part in the Fastnet race. They were 10 miles SE of Aldeburgh. As a result of the power problem, they had no engine, no navigation lights and intermittent radio.

Although they were under sail, they were a navigation hazard due to not having any navigation lights. Aldeburgh lifeboat was tasked to escort the yacht towards Lowestoft, with Lowestoft lifeboat also launching to continue the escort into Lowestoft. They rendezvoued 10 miles north of Aldeburgh.

26^th June 2017

Freddie Cooper’, was launched after there was a report of an 11 metre motor boat taking on water 8 miles East South East of Aldeburgh. At 2.43pm there was a launch request by UK Coastguard to a report of a motor boat taking on water near Aldeburgh. There were 2 persons on board.

Once on scene, the crew of the ‘Freddie Cooper’ assessed the casualty and, as they were managing with their pumps, escorted them to the mouth of the River Deben. Once it was established that they were safe to continue, the ALB returned to station. Aldeburgh ALB returned to station at 6.15 pm

Callout No. 5

4^thJune 2017

Aldeburgh’s ILB was requested to launch at 12.32, at the request of Humber Coastguard. It had been reported that a barge, in the River Alde, was moored with no crew on board (someone had been seen earlier), with the possibility of a man overboard. With RNLI’s recently launched 2017 Respect the Water Campaign, in trying to help reduce the number of drownings that occur each year, it was a matter of urgency to start a search.

While progressing to the scene, there was a follow up report that there was someone on board, but the ILB crew were requested by Humber Coastguard to confirm the sighting. Once on scene this report was confirmed, so the ILB was stood down and returned to station at 13.35.

1^st June 2017

Aldeburgh’s ILB was launched to investigate a report of a boat that appeared to have been abandoned. Once on scene, the crew investigated this report and finding that the boat was not a navigational hazard, returned to station.

29^th May 2017

Aldeburgh’s ILB was launched at 6.20am, at the request of Humber Coastguard, to a report of four persons stranded south of Aldeburgh. The ILB crew conducted a thorough search of both sides of the river. Humber Coastguard then received information from the original caller saying they were safe and did not require any assistance.

This was important information, particularly with RNLI’s recent launch of 2017 Respect the Water Campaign, in trying to help reduce the number of drownings that occur each year. The search was stopped at 8.20am and the ILB returned to station at 8.40am.

19^th May 2017

Aldeburgh Inshore Lifeboat ‘Susan Scott’ launched to investigate structures in the sea North of Aldeburgh. The new ILB at Aldeburgh Lifeboat Station, ‘Susan Scott’, was launched at 09.53 to three structures, tethered together, sighted approximately half a mile off the beach North of Aldeburgh.

On arrival to this structure, it was deemed that is constituted a small vessel navigation hazard, so the ILB crew, with the assistance of a local fisherman, brought the structure back to the beach. ILB returned to the beach at 11.15.

30^th April 2017

Aldeburgh’s All Weather and Inshore Lifeboats were launched after there was a report of a 28-foot yacht stranded on the mud at the mouth of the River Ore. While on exercise the RNLI Aldeburgh ALB was diverted, at the request of Humber Coastguard, to a report of a yacht aground at the mouth of the River Ore.

Soon afterwards the ILB was also launched, in the River Alde and proceeded via the River Ore to assist the casualty. Aldeburgh ALB stood by just outside the river mouth. On arrival at scene, the ILB crew discovered that the yacht was inside the river mouth and was in danger of running aground again, after it had initially managed to refloat. A tow was established and the yacht was taken to Orford Quay.

23^rd March 2017

Aldeburgh All Weather Lifeboat, the Freddie Cooper, was launched on Thursday at the request of Humber Coast Guard, to a 13.5 metre trawler which had suffered engine failure approximately 4 nautical miles East of Sizewell.

Once on scene, a tow was established, heading towards Harwich. Weather conditions were NE force 6-7 winds, with rough sea conditions. Harwich lifeboat assisted by taking the tow East of the River Deben and taking it to berth at Harwich. Aldeburgh ALB returned to station at 10.30pm.
